About

Our Ethos

UCL Socialist Society was established in 2023 to increase accessibility in political and economic education and give back to our community!

One of our three primary aims is to make education and careers in politics and economics more accessible at UCL. Currently, there is axiomatically narrow access to elite education and employment positions with 29% of current MPs coming from a private school background - 4 times higher than the electorate they represent. It is our ambition to alleviate some of these disparities and provide a new generation of UCL-graduated politicians, philosophers and economists with a holistic outlook on British economics.

Our second core aim is giving back to UCL's local community. We volunteering at bottom-up social mobility organisations such as C4WS Homeless Project, a charity providing shelter, mentoring, English classes, jobs, clubs and clinics to the homeless and vulnerable in Euston. We have organised a group volunteer session at their Friday Club, a weekly drop-in service that has been running for 10 years, where we will prepare, serve and share meals with C4WS’ guests. Here guests receive companionship, a hot and healthy lunch, professional welfare support, physiotherapy, hairdressing and health screenings.

Further to this, we aim to aim increasing political education and awareness in schools in low voter turnout postcodes. Deprivation is chillingly and irrevocably linked to low voter turnout. Research published by East London Lines (ELL) in 2014 showed that each of the 3 wards [Hoxton (Hackney), Evelyn (Lewisham), Fieldway (Croydon)] has the highest deprivation score and the lowest voter turnout for their respective boroughs. We aim to deliver talks in schools in each of these 3 East London wards, informing Year 13 students (who will have just turned / will soon turn the voting age) the importance of voting, how to vote, how to get involved in local and national politics, encouraging them to pursue careers in politics, philosophy and economics and providing personal statement help to students wishing to apply to UCL for such courses.
